Students at all levels in the Spanish program participate in the Student-as-Practitioner experience. Through hands-on activities and direct contact with the growing Hispanic community, students better understand the Spanish-speaking world and its bearing on their lives. The SAP component requires that students interact with their classmates while speaking Spanish. For example, a student may research and present the traditional flamenco dance, history, music, and steps, and then the class as a whole could attempt to dance the flamenco led by the "expert" student. Students are encouraged to pick topics that may help them in their field of study in the future. Criminal Justice majors who plan to be police officers may perform a skit in Spanish that will require them to focus on vocabulary dealing with laws, crimes, and street Spanish. The entire class will learn a new set of practical vocabulary that is not always addressed in introductory textbooks. Resort Management majors may choose to do a restaurant skit or interview a local chef and explain to the class how to prepare an authentic Hispanic dish. Spanish Education majors may apply for a Spanish teaching assistant position and conduct the Spanish lab throughout the semester. Additional examples include the following:
