Writing SAP

The Lakeland College writing major is uniquely suited to the SAP concept because it focuses directly on preparing students for careers in a variety of writing fields. Many courses offer workshop environments that require students to provide and receive feedback from peers and professors. Whether the genre is fiction, poetry, news writing, or public relations writing, these workshops help students develop their skills and gain experience as writers in ways that mirror feedback processes in the professional world. Contact with professional designers, communication specialists, editors, and writers occur throughout the major and helps students prepare for the public contributions they are expected to make.

When students graduate as a writing major, they are already practitioners in this field. Students have published reviews on Amazon.com as a direct result of their work in Advanced Composition (WRT 300) and designed marketing layouts for nonprofit organizations (WRT 150). All writing majors play a role in the development of Lakeland’s student-run media, whether as editors, writers, photographers, or designers; students in these groups regularly travel to regional conventions and have received awards for their work. In the Fiction and Poetry Writing sequences (WRT 215, 220, 410, and 420), students are actively involved in not only creating their own work, but also submitting it for publication, presenting it at public readings (like the Foot of the Lake Poetry Collective in Fond du Lac), and helping community members develop their own poetry in a Sheboygan poetry circle.
