2021 grad holds Marine officer commissioning ceremony at Lakeland

Nicole Barth ’21 received her commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps in a ceremony held at Lakeland on Saturday.

Barth graduated from Lakeland in May with a master of science in leadership and organizational development, and she said several of her courses were instrumental in preparing her for her commission.

Family and friends gathered for a commissioning ceremony held in front of Old Main Hall, followed by a dinner in the Young Family Campus Center catered by Lakeland Dining Services.

Nicole’s brother, Aaron, a 2018 Lakeland graduate, helped pin her Second Lieutenant bars on her uniform as part of the ceremony. Her father, Pete, is head cross country and track and field coach at Lakeland.

Up next for Barth is six months basic officer course training in Quantico, Va., where she will learn infantry skills to be a platoon commander and train and evaluate her academic, leadership and military skills.
