The Lakeland Student Environment
Lakeland is a fun and exciting place to be in spite
(or some would say, because) of its rural location. With vibrant student
activities and campus organizations and award-winning athletics teams,
there's a lot of action on the Lakeland campus at all times of the year.
Lakeland offers the kind of small-town atmosphere that allows anyone to
be involved in anything that interests them, whether it be writing a column
for the student newspaper or campaigning with the Student Association
for an officer's position to make Lakeland a better place. Visit the Photo Gallery in the Admissions section for a sneak peek at some of the
events and scenes around campus!
Residence Life
Lakeland college staffs each of its Residence Facilities
with full-time professionally trained hall directors. The directors are
responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of their facility
from discipline to programming. Each hall is also staffed upper-class
students who serve as Resident
Assistants, that provide assistance and services to all resident students.

Career Development aids students and alumni in
developing, evaluating and effectively initiating and implementing career
plans. We help students to engage in self-assessment, obtain occupational
information, explore employment opportunities within their individual
field, examine employment opportunities in related fields, present themselves
effectively as candidates for employment, develop productive job search
methods, and explore careers through internships and other forms of experiential
learning.
To carry out these tasks we offer workshops, seminars, internship opportunities,
individual counseling, setting up credential files and provide access
to the Career Resource Center. Also available is a Lakeland
Career Development Links Page to assist in career and job searches.
The Lakeland College Learning Tree Academy provides
a high quality program for preschool children of Lakeland College students,
staff, and faculty. The environment prepared for the children offers a
variety of activities to stimulate the young learner. Through the developmentally
appropriate curriculum, children are exposed to play opportunities in
which they express their independence, social skills, problem-solving
skills and an innate joy of activity. Our children are also exposed to
guided discovery opportunities that allow them to stretch their curiosity,
experiment with alternatives and gain intellectual empowerment over their
environment.
Academic: Students who have academic difficulties
have a number of resource people and programs available to them on the
Lakeland campus. The first and most important source of academic advise
is the student's academic advisor. Help with reading is available by contacting
the English and Reading instructor. Lakeland offers tutoring assistance
to help those who experience difficulty in a specific course or subject
area. Tutors are usually students who have excelled in the subject. There
is no charge for tutoring services. A tutoring schedule is posted at the
beginning of each term. Arrangements for special tutoring can be initiated
by contacting the Tutoring Coordinator.
Financial: Student experiencing financial difficulties or having questions
regarding charges to their account are encouraged to contact the Student
Financial Counselor. Assistance in the areas of financial planning and
budgeting will be provided.
Personal: All people encounter some situations in their life for which
they may need help. Concerns may revolve around grief, a relationship,
the family, use of alcohol, drugs or food, feelings of low self esteem,
a lack of assertiveness, or depression. To assist in these situations,
a professional psychotherapist will provide counseling for students who
seek increased self understanding and insight into academic, vocational
or personal problems.
Spiritual: The campus minister is a trained counselor and is available
for religious and personal counseling during and after office hours.
Dean of Students
When you don't know where to go for assistance, come to the Dean of Student's
Office. The Dean and her staff provide assistance to all students with
any college-related concerns. There are many faculty and staff on campus
eager to assist students. The Dean and her staff will provide assistance
directly to students or make referrals to others on campus who can help.
Promoting a campus environment that provides an opportunity for all students to learn and develop is
an important function of this office. The Dean is available to assist
students who have questions or concerns.
Escort Services
Escort service is provided by the Department of
Safety & Security. This service is available to any student, staff
or faculty person upon request. Security personnel may be reached at any
time through a campus pager system.
Student financial aid information is available
from the Financial Aid Office located in W.A. Krueger Hall. Please
schedule an appointment to ensure time to discuss your questions. Financial
aid awards are distributed during the summer, prior to the beginning of
each academic year. Loan processing and other services are available throughout
the year.
The college food service facilities are located
on the second floor of the Campus Center. Food service provides meals
for all resident students holding valid Lakeland I.D. cards. Validated
I.D. cards must be presented at all meals that are to be eaten in the
dining room. All commuter athletes that are authorized to have a dinner
meal after practices must also have a validated I.D. card to eat in the
dining room. Commuter students, faculty and staff members, and guests
are also welcome to eat in the dining hall on a cash basis. Food service
hours are posted in the Campus Center.
New students and students who have been absent
from the campus for a year or more are required to submit a completed
physical assessment form to the campus health service. All health information
is used by the college nurse as background for administering to the student's
health needs. The nurse has regular office hours on campus for consultation
and treatment of minor ailments. Her office is located in the Campus Center.
The general services of the nurse are first aid and common medications;
personal health counseling and mental health referral; alcohol and drug
information; and water bottles, ice packs and crutches.
International Student Advising
Almost 17% of the Lakeland College resident student
population is from abroad. International students add a special dimension
to campus life and give everyone the opportunity to experience many different
cultures. Lakeland assists international students with legal forms, information
concerning the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, and other
federal and state government agencies.
The Learning Resource Center offers assistance
to the entire student body as an academic support service. It is housed
on the third floor of Old Main Hall and has many individualized services
available to all students. There is space designed for small study groups
and conversation areas. There are also many computer programs to augment
courses on campus.
The John H. Esch library has magazines, newspapers,
records, computers, and internal and external databases available, in
addition to usual reference books. Study space for about 100 people is
available.
Muskie Mart
The Muskie Mart is open for short-order meals
or snacks, as a place to relax, study or to chat with friends. It is open
Monday-Friday for lunch as well as every evening for dinner or late night
snacks.
Orientation
Each year, many people are actively involved in
planning an orientation period prior to the beginning of classes each
fall. It is through the efforts of the entire Lakeland community that
new students are warmly welcomed and oriented to college life. The orientation
program includes finalizing academic schedules and provides opportunities
for new students to get involved in campus life. College faculty, staff,
and students are also present during Orientation to acquaint new students
with the services and facilities available on campus and in the surrounding
communities.
The Pub is located on the first floor of the Campus
Center. There are billiards, video games, and dart boards available. Food
and beverages are sold during posted hours.
Registrar's Office
The following services are available in the registrar's
office: Information on course offerings and class registration, including
adding, dropping, withdrawing from or auditing a class; Information on
special enrollment status, including PACE. Any change in class enrollment
status should be processed through the Registrar's Office; Information
regarding the student's personal academic record, including evaluation
of transfer credit, graduation evaluations and grade point averages. Students
may receive official copies of their transcripts from this office.
The following forms are processed by this office: enrollment verification; enrollment histories; good student
verification (for insurance purposes); change of address; and official
withdrawal from the college.
Religious Activities
A contemporary, ecumenical worship service is
held each Wednesday morning in the Ley
Chapel. Each year, an outstanding Theologian delivers the Mission
House Lecture. Also, lectures and discussions are led by faculty, staff
and visiting theologians throughout the academic year. Area churches and
synagogues also welcome Lakeland students, faculty and staff. The campus
minister advises and holds discussion sessions with all interested students
and, in particular, with those who are contemplating entering church-related
careers. The campus minister is also available for personal counseling.
The Department of Safety and Security exists to
serve the needs of the college, particularly the student population. The
functions of the student and professional staff includes assuring the
safety of all college people (guests and visitors), addressing the adherence
to college policy, regulating use of college buildings, inspecting facilities
and grounds for safety and governing college parking. These college staff
members have been trained to handle emergency situations and behavioral
problems. Reports must be filed with the Department in all cases of injury,
accident, vandalism, and theft.
Shuttle Service
Students who do not have vehicles on campus may
take advantage of Lakeland's shuttle service. A Lakeland van makes regular
trips from the Campus Center into Sheboygan on Tuesday and Thursday evenings
and Sunday afternoon. Students get dropped off at the mall, grocery store,
or the movie theatre and are picked up after having time to do their errands.
The shuttle runs during the academic year, unless no campus vehicles are
available or if weather does not permit.
Student Employment
Information and counseling regarding part-time
jobs, both on- and off-campus, are available through the Student Employment
Coordinator. Campus jobs pay an hourly rate of at least minimum wage.
Priority for these positions is given to full-time students who have been
awarded a federal work/study grant in their financial aid proposal. The
actual number of hours that can be worked is determined by the amount
awarded on the financial aid award. Off-campus jobs vary significantly
in wages and number of hours that can be worked, so students may earn
as little or as much as they wish. Off-campus jobs are not based on financial
aid. These positions are available to anyone.
Wehr Center
The Todd Wehr Center is primarily used for intercollegiate
events, practices, instruction and recreation. The building is reserved
for Lakeland students, faculty, staff, and their families. Guests are
permitted when accompanied by an authorized person. Users of the building
must make arrangements with the building supervisor in order to guarantee
reserved time.
