Amazing Race Takes Students, Staff to Las Vegas

Student Life - posted on 10/5/2006

Lakeland students, faculty and staff are, once again, lacing up their running shoes, charging up their iPods and heading to Lakeland's fitness center to compete in Lakeland College's own "Amazing Race" organized by Lakeland's Health and Wellness Program.

In the TV version of "The Amazing Race," the goal is to reach the final destination before the opposition. But in Lakeland's race, participants compete with themselves by working out to earn points every time they set foot in the fitness center.

Participants start at Lakeland and try to "work out" their way, in miles, to this school year's destination - Las Vegas - by spring break. Not only is there a new destination this year, but additional prizes when participants reach specific stops along the way.

The first stop is Madison (100 miles) which earns them a water bottle and a Subway gift card. The second stop is Topeka (679 mi.), good for a t-shirt and a fitness DVD. Next is Denver (1,095 mi.) to pick up a sweatshirt and a yoga mat. Reaching Las Vegas (1,840 mi.) awards them the satisfaction of completing their journey, along with a professional body massage or a gift certificate to their choice of business and a yoga ball.

To sign up for the race, stop by the fitness center desk and fill out an entry sheet and begin your journey to a healthier lifestyle, while having some fun along the way!
