New Lakeland agreement opens doors for foreign study

Academics - posted on 6/27/2005

Lakeland College and East China Institute of Technology have signed a three-year teacher training agreement that will open the door to foreign study for students at both colleges.

Lakeland will accept teachers and students from ECIT, located in Jiangxi, China, to observe, provide support in Lakeland Chinese language classes and participate in seminars and programs on campus and in the surrounding community.

Lakeland will waive tuition for one visiting teacher or student for the fall and spring semesters.

Here at Lakeland we recognize that the development of improved political, social and economic relations between China and the United States depends on improved mutual understanding by the governments and peoples of both nations, said Tony Fessler, Lakelands vice president for international programs.

Our friends at ECIT agree. Were both excited about the doors this agreement will open, and were anxious to get started.

Lakeland is also hoping that groups of ECIT students will come to Lakeland for the colleges English Language Institute (ELI), a four-week summer language emersion program.

Fessler said Lakeland and ECIT are also working on an articulation agreement that would see Lakeland accept credit for some ECIT coursework toward a Lakeland degree and allow ECIT students to enroll at Lakeland to earn a bachelors degree.

Lakeland is also exploring sending groups of domestic students studying Chinese language to ECIT for the three-week Mayterm session or at other times, similar to what the college is currently doing with its resort management students and Shanghai Finance University (SFU) in Shanghai.

Lakeland currently offers four different courses in Chinese.

Some of these goals are a couple of years in the future, but were excited about the possibilities for our students, Fessler said.

Lakeland recently hosted a delegation from ECIT at its Sheboygan County campus where the agreement was finalized and signed.

Founded in 1956, ECIT is a comprehensive university with three campuses, over 20,000 students and over 50 undergraduate and 13 graduate programs.
