Lakeland professor, student present papers at national conference

A Lakeland College faculty member and student recently presented papers at a national conference in Boston.

Meg Albrinck, associate professor of literature and writing, and Madison Mindiola, a junior from Waukesha majoring in English and secondary education, presented papers on the film "Fight Club" at the national conference of the Popular Culture Association and American Culture Association.

The papers were based on work the two had done together in an honors directed reading on film and feminist theory.

Albrinck's paper, "Swan Fight: The Power of the Gaze in 'Fight Club' and 'Black Swan'," exposed the limits of traditional gaze theory in an examination of subject-object and audience relationships in these two films.

Mindiola's paper, "The Rule of Peripheral Figures in 'Fight Club': A Visual Analysis of Marla Singer," used the theoretical work of Helene Cixous to explore feminist readings of the film. It will become a chapter of her senior honors project.
