Sheboygan South High wins Devaney High School Math Meet crown

A team from Sheboygan South High School broke rival Sheboygan North's long championship run by winning the 20th annual Lakeland College Michael J. Devaney Math Meet.

A South team (No. 4) that included seniors Zach Bennin, Travis Dumez, Angie Gorter and Noah Reetz; juniors Azkary Plautz, Alex Holmes and Jake Raml; and freshman Heath Reinl; won the title with 292 points. It's the first time in 13 years that a team from North High has not won this meet.

Second place went to team No. 7 from North and third place went to North team No. 9. Teams from North, Sheboygan Falls and Cedar Grove-Belgium came in fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, among the 36 teams entered. A total of 262 students participated in the meet representing seven area high schools.

Martin Aviles and Noah Reetz from South won medals for the top individual scores with 40 out of a possible 40 points. Third place was a tie between Zach Bennin, Travis Dumez, Angie Gorter and Alex Holmes from South and David Britton, Chamilaharindi Amithirigala, Tyler Stank and Joseph Hameister from North all with scores of 36.

A total of 12 students won honorable mention awards. In 11th place was Mike Paluchniak from Oostburg. Tied for 12th place were Spencer Ten Haken from Sheboygan County Christian and Alice Zhao, Otto Kletzein and Kaitlyn Laning from North. A seven-way tie for 16th place was held by Dustin Brouwer and Lee Veldkamp from Sheboygan County Christian, Spencer Hurlbuet and Jeremiah Kramasz from Sheboygan Falls, Trenton Vandewater from North and Jake Kaml and Mitchel Fox from South.
